State-owned Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI) has launched a new project in collaboration with Huawei. The project is aiming to integrate and upgrade the landline telephone system and mobile telecommunications networks in Iran.
Babak Tarakome, chairman of the TCI board, said that Huawei has started working on the project framework, and are gathering local technical personnel to train them for the project implementation, local ICT website CITNA reported. Mr. Tarakome also mentioned that TCI is purchasing equipment needed for the project. Although no further information was revealed about the source of equipment, it is believed that these equipment will be purchased from Huawei as well.
According to a report from The Financial Tribune, the planned contract incorporates two individual projects, IP Network Integration (IPNI) and Packet Optical Transport Network (POTN). The IPNI is aiming at concentrating all end users' data traffic, whether landline or mobile, into a single communication center. The POTN is used to expand the transmission bandwidth for the 3G and 4G network. Full details of the contract were not released by either party yet.
Iran is one of the thriving telecom market in the Middle East. By the end of 2009, Iran's telecom market ranked the fourth largest in the region at $9.2 billion. Analysts anticipate this market to grow to $12.9 billion by 2014 at a CAGR of 6.9 percent.
Due to various reasons, the telephone system in Iran is still inadequate and calls for modernization. The mobile network of the nation is mostly 2G, which has become obsolete in many developed countries. 3G and 4G are still in early stage in Iran, and signal coverage is only available in large cities such as Tehran. Iran's cellphone users are also suffering from bad reception and slow internet speed. The TCI-Huawei joint project is expected to improve the current weakness in telecom area.
