Why Coax Surge Arrestor Fails?
Most coax surge protectors are based on gas discharge tube. The gas discharge tube contains special gas that become conductive only when high-voltage surge passes. However, this gas discharge tube has a limited lifespan. If a single passing surge is too powerful, the gas discharge tube will worn out and become a permanent insulator immediately, thus lost the ability to protect the BTS antenna feeder. In addition, when the gas discharge tube received enough small lightning shock overtime, it will also lost efficiency.
What Will Happens If a BTS Surge Arrestor Fails?
Once a coaxial surge suppressor fails, it becomes a permanent insulator. When lightning strike a failed coax surge protectors, no lightning surge will be short. Best-case scenario, the rest of surge arrestor within the system would be burnt; worst-case scenario, any electronic device connected to that coax cable, including cell tower antenna and BTS cabinet devices, will be destroyed.
How Do I Know a Surge Arrestor Has Failed?
A single 10KA @8/20 µs surge is enough to negate most gas discharge tube arrestors. If the BTS tower suffered a direct lightning impact, all surge arrestors within the system must be replaced with new ones.
Also, for at most every tenth lightning surge recorded by your lightning counter in BTS, you should change new surge arrestors for the best safety concern.
