Bad Surge Arrester Can Be Dangerous, Do You Know That?

Surge arrester can protect electrical equipment from lightning surges. It is now mandatory in many technical standards. For example, in base transceiver station, we have to install coax surge arrester for main feeder cables and antenna feeder cables.
The surge arrester is becoming more and more important, and we cannot afford the risk of bad surge arresters, for it is inadequate for protection, and sometimes even detrimental and dangerous.
Why A Bad Surge Arrester Can Be Dangerous?
A surge arrester is designed to withstand surges, and each surge carries different amount of power. A good rf surge arrestor can withstand moderate surge (8/20 µs @20KA) for at least ten times, while a bad surge arrester may fail before the tenth impact (Forget about ultra-high surges. No single device can stop that alone).
When a gas tube surge protector becomes defective, it is no longer protective. If any surge happens after the surge arrester fails, every equipment within the same circuit will be toasted. For some of surge arresters that utilize MOV as primary breaker, the situation can be even worse, for MOV can burn and cause fire accident.
How Do We Know If A Surge Arrester Has Become Ineffective?
It is very difficult to know, for there is no indicator to show surge arrester's status. If you have to find out, there is a complicated way:
1. Get an ampere meter and a power supply able to create surge that voltage is higher than the breakdown voltage of the surge protector.
2. Connect the power supply to the surge protector you wish to test, and gradually raise the voltage of the power supply.
3. Check the ampere meter reading. If there is no reading on ampere meter until the voltage reaches breakdown level, then the tested surge arrester is effective.
This method is not always feasible. The already installed coax lightning protector is nearly impossible for examination.
How To Avoid Bad Surge Arresters
As introduced above, to find out if a surge arrester is effective or not is very difficult and sometimes are not practical at all.
